<p>Recent research published in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research explores the potential health implications of cannabis use specifically in relation to kidney disease. This study, conducted by researchers from Johns Hopkins University and Tulane University, employed longitudinal data collected in Baltimore, Maryland, to investigate the relationship between kidney function and cannabis consumption. <p>The findings indicated that individuals who regularly used cannabis were more likely to be younger, male, Black, and to also use cigarettes, opiates, and cocaine. Importantly, the study found that regular cannabis users did not present a higher risk for chronic kidney disease (CKD), rapid decline in kidney function, or elevated levels of albumin in urine when compared to non-cannabis users. Crucially, these conclusions remained consistent even after adjusting for socioeconomic and health factors, as well as the use of other substances.</p>

<p>Over a mean follow-up period of 8.6 years, regular cannabis use was not associated with a heightened risk of developing CKD or experiencing a rapid decline in kidney function. Neither current nor former cannabis use was linked to significant adverse kidney outcomes such as incident albuminuria. These findings align with previous studies assessing the impact of cannabis exposure on CKD risk.</p>
<p>The researchers emphasized that in their Baltimore-based cohort of adults without initial CKD, there was no independent link between cannabis consumption and adverse kidney outcomes. This study calls attention to the importance of exploring the effects of different routes and dosages of cannabis consumption on kidney health, particularly as the cannabis market diversifies with new products and methods of use.</p>
